Sabrina Vasquez |
Sabrina Vasquez has been with Masquer since 2004. She will soon be seen in the 2006 production of Traditions.
MM: Sabrina, what is your earliest theatre memory? Sabrina: In Kindergarten, I played a mouse in the 6th grade production of the Pied Piper of Hamlin. I got to be in the show because I said that I was bilingual. My big line was, "Si!" MM: What is your favourite passage of scripture? Sabrina: Right now, I'd have to say that it is Psalm 138:8. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me. MM: How about your most memorable theatre moment? Sabrina: When I was in productions at Cypress College, many moons ago, I was known as quite the backstage prankster. When I played Mae Peterson (the overbearing meddling mother) in Bye Bye Birdie, I had to put my head in the fake oven and tell my son that he didn't need to worry about me because I was just going to gas myself to death. When I stuck my head in the fake oven, I had the shock of my life. Someone had stuck a prop of a wolves head with large fangs right in the place I looked. In the video of the show (which always comes out to haunt me with I am with my old castmates) you can see me jump from fright and then start convulsing from laughter with my head in the oven. I was late on my cue because I couldn't stop laughing enough to get my head out of the oven. They got me back! I never pranked anyone onstage again after that! MM: What is/was your favourite subject in school? Sabrina: In the early days, I loved English class because I got to write stories and read books. When I got to High School, my love shifted to Musical Theater class. In college, it was Sociology classes because they were about learning about people and why they do the things they do. MM: What would we find in your refrigerator? Sabrina: A ton of leafy greens, fat/sugar free foods and bottled water. MM: Do you have any pre-show traditions? Sabrina: Depends on the show really. When I sing, I don't talk much during the day to preserve my voice. I also take extra care with my health. The only thing I consistantly do is pray before the show. MM: What are some differences between regular, & ministry theatre? Sabrina: Well, I'm not getting paid here, so that is kind of different (ha ha) But fundamentally, the motive is different. With Masquer, we are sharing God's love with the talents and blessings He has bestowed upon us. We are singing/acting for God. In regular theater, I have found that it is more for just me. In regular theater, I have found that I tend to escape life through my characters. In Masquers, it is like finding a better life through God. The cohesiveness of the cast is also different than regular theater. In Masquer, the cast is supportive of one another. If someone skips a line or something, no one is wagging fingers or brow beating. In regular theater it is very cut-throat. People can't wait for you to blow a line so they can snatch up your part. So I have found that there is definately more love here. MM: What are you currently reading? Sabrina: I just recently finished reading Odd Girl Out, a book about bullying and aggression in girls. I highly recommend it for parents of adolescent girls. MM: When you're not at Masquer, what would we find you doing? Sabrina: Stamping! It is my new hobby and side business. I recently became a Stampin Up! demonstator, so now you can find me going to workshops and making holiday cards with my daughter and my boyfriend. MM: What's your favourite Masquer memory? Sabrina: Finding a sister and roomate in JJ during and after Godspell. My second favorite is when Sarah introduced me to my new best helper ever, Downey Wrinkle Spray. I never have to iron again! MM: What has been the most challenging aspect of this ministry? Sabrina: I guess it would be the spiritual attacks we have endured both personally and as a cast. But, it means that we are doing good, so it is worth it. It still doesn't make it fun though. MM: How is it working with such a diverse group of people? Sabrina: Interesting to say the least. We all come from such different walks of life. Our personal experiences help shed light on certain subjects that maybe other cast members have not encountered yet. It's also very fun. We have crazy inside jokes and we are constantly cracking ourselves up. MM: Who is the toughest audience? Sabrina: Myself. I tend to be my own worst critic. MM: Who would you choose to play you in the production of your life? Sabrina: Wow, tough question. Ummm... probably America Ferrera. (Real Women Have Curves, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Ugly Betty) MM: What must you have with you in rehearsal? Sabrina: Water and my notes. MM: What is your favorite quote? Sabrina: Currently it is a quote that Steve Broberg borrowed which I am also borrowing. MM: What is the 1st question you ask yourself before approaching a role? Sabrina: Who are you, really? Then I give that character a past, present and future. If it isn't already given to me in the script, I invent it. MM: What is your greatest indulgence? Sabrina: It used to be pizza. Now it is purchasing stamping supplies. MM: Who is on the guest list of your perfect dinner party? Sabrina: The very same people who get invited to my regular dinner parties. MM: What do you want us to know about you? Sabrina: I'd like everyone to know that feel really blessed to be a part of Masquer Ministries. I'd also like everyone to know that I love my daughter Alyssa and my boyfriend Dan very, very much. I also miss pizza. You should know that too. |
